Charles University Prague is one of the oldest universities in the world, founded in 1348. It consistently ranks among Europe's top 200 universities, offers more than 290 programmes taught in English, and charges tuition fees that are a fraction of what you would pay in the UK, Australia, or the United States. For Asian families doing their research, Charles University is one of the strongest value propositions in European higher education.

Why Charles University Stands Out

Charles University has 17 faculties spread across Prague and the city of Hradec Králové, covering medicine, law, social sciences, humanities, natural sciences, computer science, theology, pharmacy, and more. That breadth is unusual — most European universities of this age specialise in far fewer areas. At Charles University, you can find a rigorous computer science programme and a top-ranked medical school under the same institutional umbrella.

For families comparing value: a programme that costs £30,000 to £50,000 per year at a UK university will often cost €5,000 to €10,000 per year at Charles University. The academic quality — and the employer recognition — is genuinely comparable for most fields.

English-Taught Programmes at Charles University

Studies conducted in the Czech language are free of charge for all students, including international students. If you are not yet proficient in Czech, you can study entirely in English. Charles University currently offers:

  • Bachelor's programmes in English: 64 options across multiple faculties

  • Master's programmes in English: 66 options

  • Long-cycle Master's programmes (medicine, dentistry, law, pharmacy): 34 programmes

Popular English-taught subjects include medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, economics, political science, computer science, international studies, social sciences, philosophy, and law. The Faculty of Medicine is particularly well regarded — Charles University medical degrees are recognised across Europe and in many countries beyond.

Living Costs in Prague

Prague is one of the most affordable capital cities in Central Europe. Most students budget between €550 and €900 per month, depending on whether they live in a university dormitory or private accommodation.

  • University dormitory: €250–€350/month

  • Private accommodation (shared flat): €400–€600/month

  • Food (cooking at home plus occasional café): €150–€200/month

  • Public transport monthly student pass: approximately €5.50/month

  • Personal, social, and other expenses: €100–€150/month

Students living in a dormitory and cooking most of their own meals can manage comfortably on €550–€700 per month. Students renting privately and eating out more will spend closer to €800–€1,000 per month.

How to Apply to Charles University

Charles University has 17 independent faculties, each running its own admissions process. There is no central Admissions Office. The first step is to identify which faculty offers your chosen programme, then follow that faculty's specific application instructions.

Typical requirements for English-taught programmes:

  • Completed secondary education: Singapore A-levels, IB Diploma, or equivalent

  • English proficiency: IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 85 (test results must be less than 2 years old)

  • Certified copies of school leaving certificate and academic transcripts

  • Passport copy

  • Entrance exam or portfolio for some competitive programmes — check the specific faculty

Application deadlines vary by faculty. For most faculties, the deadline for October-start programmes is 30 April. Medical and dentistry programmes are highly competitive — their deadlines can fall as early as November for the following academic year's intake. Apply as early as you can.

Visa Requirements for Asian Students

Singapore passport holders can enter the Czech Republic without a visa for stays up to 90 days. Since a full degree programme runs longer than 90 days, Singapore students still need to apply for a Long-Term Visa for the Purpose of Studies — but you can enter the country first and apply locally before the 90-day visa-free window closes.

Students from Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, India, and most other Asian countries must apply for the Long-Term Study Visa before arriving in the Czech Republic. Applications are submitted at the Czech Embassy or consulate in your home country. Allow at least 8–12 weeks for processing.

Scholarships at Charles University

Charles University offers merit-based scholarships and tuition-fee reductions for outstanding international students. Individual faculties also run their own scholarship programmes — amounts and criteria vary, so check directly with your chosen faculty. The Czech government separately administers a scholarship programme for students from developing countries through the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports.

What Student Life Is Like at Charles University

Prague is one of Europe's best student cities. It is safe, walkable, and extremely affordable by European standards. Charles University students have access to well-stocked libraries, sports facilities, cultural events, and a well-connected international student community. Most faculty buildings are within central Prague, making it easy to live close to where you study.

Part-time work is permitted for international students on a Long-Term Study Visa in most circumstances, which means you can supplement your budget while studying. Combined with Prague's low cost of living, this makes Charles University one of the most financially accessible routes to a European degree for students coming from Asia.
