Charles University Prague: Complete Guide for International Students

Charles University is the oldest university in Central Europe — founded in 1348 and ranked 265th in the world by QS in 2026. For Asian students researching European degrees, it offers a rare combination: a globally recognised name, English-taught programmes across medicine, law, sciences and humanities, and tuition fees far below what the UK or Australia would charge. This guide covers everything you need — programmes, fees, how to apply, and what life in Prague actually costs.
Why Charles University Stands Out
Founded in 1348 — the oldest university in Central Europe and one of the oldest in the world
Ranked 265th globally in the 2026 QS World University Rankings — the top-ranked university in the Czech Republic
17 faculties covering medicine, law, science, arts, humanities, education, physical education and more
Over 60 degree programmes taught in English, from Bachelor's level through to PhD
Located in Prague — a UNESCO World Heritage capital with excellent public transport, strong graduate job prospects, and lower living costs than Western European cities
English-Taught Programmes at Charles University
Over 60 programmes at Charles University are taught fully in English, spread across Bachelor's, Master's and PhD levels. The choice is widest at Master's and PhD level. English-taught Bachelor's programmes exist but are more limited in number.
First, Second and Third Faculty of Medicine: General Medicine and Dentistry — among the most internationally sought-after programmes
Faculty of Law: LLM and some Bachelor's programmes in English
Faculty of Mathematics and Physics: Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics
Faculty of Social Sciences: International Relations, Sociology and Economics
Faculty of Humanities: Interdisciplinary humanities programmes
Faculty of Physical Education and Sport: Exercise science and sport coaching
Most international students from Asia choose English-taught programmes, which do carry tuition fees. The alternative — studying in Czech — is free of charge, but requires completing a paid one-year preparatory language course before your degree begins.
Tuition Fees at Charles University
Tuition fees at Charles University depend entirely on the language of instruction and the faculty. This is the single most important thing to understand about costs here.
Czech-language programmes
Free of charge for everyone — including international students from Singapore, Malaysia or anywhere outside the EU. The condition is that you must be proficient in Czech, which typically means completing a paid one-year preparatory course before your degree begins.
English-taught programmes
For most Asian students, English-taught programmes are the practical route. Tuition fees for 2025–26:
Most Bachelor's and Master's programmes (non-EU students): approximately €4,100–€7,100 per year
Faculty of Mathematics and Physics (confirmed from 2026/27): €7,100 per year for non-EU students
Medical programmes (General Medicine, Dentistry in English): significantly higher — check directly with the faculty as fees change annually
Application fee: 940 CZK per faculty application (approximately €38)
For context: a three-year English-taught Bachelor's degree in science or social sciences at Charles University would cost most Asian students approximately €12,000–€21,000 in total tuition. An equivalent degree in the UK typically costs international students over €60,000.
Living Costs in Prague
Prague is the most expensive city in the Czech Republic, but remains one of the most affordable European capitals. Here is a realistic monthly budget breakdown for a student at Charles University:
University dormitory room: €120–€300 per month
Room in a shared private flat: €200–€400 per month
Groceries and eating out combined: €120–€220 per month
Monthly public transport student pass: approximately €5.50
Utilities and internet (private flat): €40–€90 per month — often included in dormitory fees
Personal expenses and social activities: €60–€150 per month
A realistic monthly total for most students is €500–€900. Students in university dormitories who cook regularly tend to stay near the lower end of this range.
If cost is a priority, some students choose Brno — living costs run 10–20% lower than Prague. For a complete breakdown of what you will pay across the Czech Republic, see our guide to tuition fees and living costs in the Czech Republic.
How to Apply to Charles University
Charles University has no central admissions office. Each of its 17 faculties runs its own application process, with separate portals, deadlines and requirements. Understanding this before you start is essential.
Choose your faculty and programme — Search the study programmes database at cuni.cz and confirm the programme is taught in English.
Check the specific deadline for your faculty — Medicine programmes typically close 30 November of the year before entry. Most other faculties have deadlines between late January and 30 April.
Prepare your documents — You will typically need: secondary school leaving certificate (for Bachelor's) or Bachelor's degree (for Master's); certified translations; English language proficiency certificate; and a copy of your passport.
Submit the online application — Each faculty has its own application portal. The fee is 940 CZK (approximately €38) per faculty, paid online.
Complete entrance requirements — Some programmes require written entrance exams; others assess applications on academic records alone. Medical faculty entrance exams can often be taken at centres abroad.
Apply for your Czech student visa — Non-EU students need a Long-Term Visa for Study (Type D). Start this immediately after receiving your offer letter. Processing at Czech embassies can take two to three months or longer.
English Language Requirements
The minimum English requirement for most English-taught programmes is B2 level (Common European Framework — CEFR). Accepted certificates include:
IELTS: 5.5 or above
TOEFL IBT: 72 or above
TOEFL ITP: 543 or above
Cambridge B2 First (FCE) or above
Some faculties set higher requirements — always check the specific programme page. If your secondary school or university uses English as the primary medium of instruction, many faculties will accept a letter from your institution instead of a formal test certificate.
Scholarships at Charles University
Several scholarship options are available to international students at Charles University:
Faculty merit scholarships: Most faculties offer tuition fee reductions or waivers for students who perform well after their first year
Faculty of Mathematics and Physics (from 2026/27): Dedicated tuition fee scholarships for Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics students at Bachelor's and Master's level
PhD stipend: PhD students typically receive a monthly scholarship of at least 10,500 CZK (approximately €420) — making doctoral study largely self-funding for living costs
Václav Havel Scholarship: Available to students facing political repression in their home country
Czech Government Scholarship — Developing Countries: Full tuition coverage for students from Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Georgia, Nigeria and others — applications open in September, one year before intended entry
These scholarships are competitive. Build your financial plan around paying full tuition fees, and apply for scholarships in parallel — do not rely on them as your primary funding source. The PhD stipend is the most reliable option for students considering doctoral study.
Is Charles University the Right Choice?
Charles University is a strong fit if:
You want one of the best-ranked universities in Central Europe at a fraction of the cost of Western alternatives
You are interested in medicine, sciences, law, social sciences or humanities and comfortable studying in English
You are comfortable navigating a decentralised university where each faculty has its own application process and deadlines
You are planning a full Bachelor's, Master's or PhD degree — not a short-term exchange
It may be a harder fit if you expect a single unified campus experience or need a wide range of English-taught Bachelor's programmes — options at undergraduate level are more limited than at postgraduate level.
