Charles University Prague is the oldest and most prestigious university in the Czech Republic -- founded in 1348 -- and the highest-ranked university in Central and Eastern Europe. Ranked #265 worldwide by QS in 2026, it offers more than 290 English-taught programs across 17 faculties, with tuition fees that are a fraction of what UK or Australian universities charge. If you are an Asian student researching European universities that combine genuine academic prestige with affordability, this guide covers everything you need to know.
What Is Charles University?
Charles University was founded in 1348 by Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV and is one of the oldest universities in the world still in operation. Today it has 17 independent faculties spread across Prague and two other Czech cities -- Pilsen and Hradec Kralove -- and enrolls around 53,000 students. Its international student community is large and growing every year.
The university is comprehensive in scope. Its faculties cover medicine, law, social sciences, humanities, natural sciences, mathematics and physics, computer science, education, and more. Whatever subject you are planning to study, Charles University almost certainly has a faculty dedicated to it. This breadth -- combined with its QS top 300 ranking -- makes it genuinely unusual among affordable European universities.
English-Taught Programs at Charles University
Charles University offers more than 290 study programs taught in English at Bachelor's, Master's, and PhD levels. You do not need to speak Czech to complete your degree, though learning some Czech helps with everyday life in Prague. The faculties with the strongest English-taught offerings are:
Faculty of Medicine (five campuses: three in Prague, one in Pilsen, one in Hradec Kralove) -- General Medicine and Dentistry taught fully in English
Faculty of Mathematics and Physics -- Computer Science, Informatics, Mathematics, and Physics
Faculty of Social Sciences -- International Area Studies, Journalism, Political Science, Economics
Faculty of Arts -- Humanities, History, Philosophy, Linguistics, Psychology
Faculty of Science -- Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Geography
Faculty of Law -- LLM programs for international students
Faculty of Education -- Teacher training programs in English
If you are planning to study medicine, Charles University is one of the most recognised institutions for English-medium medical education in Europe. Its medical faculties are fully accredited by the European Union and the qualifications are recognised for medical licensing purposes in many countries. If you plan to practise in Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, or the UK, confirm recognition with the relevant medical board before applying -- but Charles University graduates have successfully registered in all of these countries.
Tuition Fees for International Students
The most important thing to understand about tuition at Charles University is this: Czech-language programs are free for everyone, regardless of nationality. English-taught programs carry annual tuition fees. Fees are set independently by each faculty and vary significantly between programs. Here are current figures for the 2025-26 academic year:
General Medicine (English-taught): 12,000 EUR per year
Dentistry (English-taught): approximately 12,000-14,000 EUR per year -- confirm directly with your target faculty
Faculty of Mathematics and Physics (non-EU students, from 2026-27): 7,100 EUR per year
Social sciences, humanities, and arts programs: approximately 1,020-5,000 EUR per year, varying by faculty and program
Law LLM: contact the Faculty of Law directly for current fees
PhD programs: fees are typically lower and may be fully covered by research grants or faculty funding
To put these figures in perspective: a medical degree at a UK university currently costs international students 38,000-45,000 GBP per year. At Charles University, a fully EU-accredited English-medium medical degree costs 12,000 EUR per year -- roughly one-quarter of the UK price. For non-medical programs, the comparison is equally striking.
Always verify fees directly on your target faculty's official admissions page before applying. Fees are updated each academic year and differ not just between faculties but between specific programs within the same faculty.
Monthly Living Costs in Prague
Prague is significantly more affordable than Western European capitals. As a Charles University student, a realistic monthly budget is 600-850 EUR, depending on your accommodation choice and lifestyle. Here is a typical breakdown:
University dormitory room: 120-300 EUR per month
Shared private flat (single room in shared apartment): 200-400 EUR per month
Groceries and cooking at home: 100-150 EUR per month
Eating out occasionally (not daily): 50-80 EUR per month
Monthly student public transport pass: approximately 5.50 EUR -- one of the cheapest in Europe
Health insurance: 30-60 EUR per month
Phone, toiletries, and leisure: 80-120 EUR per month
Realistic monthly total: 600-850 EUR. Students living in university dormitories and cooking at home regularly can comfortably manage at the lower end of this range. Those renting privately in central Prague and eating out more frequently will sit towards the upper end. Prague's public transport network is excellent, so you do not need to live close to your faculty to manage comfortably.

Admission Requirements
For Bachelor's Programs
Completed secondary education equivalent to a Czech maturita -- Singapore A-Levels, IB Diploma, and Malaysian STPM are generally accepted
English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 85 or higher, IELTS 6.5 or higher, or Cambridge C1 Advanced (requirements vary by faculty -- always confirm with your target faculty)
Faculty-specific entrance examination -- required for Medicine, Mathematics, Physics, and some other competitive programs. Past papers are available on faculty websites
Application submitted via the faculty's own online application portal (not a central Charles University system -- each faculty has its own)
For Master's Programs
Completed Bachelor's degree in a relevant field
Academic transcripts demonstrating strong results
English proficiency proof at the same standard as Bachelor's programs
Letters of recommendation and a statement of purpose
For research-based Master's and PhD programs: a research proposal outlining your intended study area
The application deadline for Bachelor's programs for the 2026-27 academic year is 30 April 2026. If you are applying from outside the EU and Schengen Zone, apply well before this date -- you will need time for visa processing after receiving your admission letter. Scholarships at Charles University
Charles University is not a heavily scholarshipped institution in the way that some UK or US universities are. Most students pay the listed tuition fees and cover their own living costs. That said, several scholarship routes are worth knowing about:
Faculty merit scholarships: most faculties award partial tuition reductions or cash scholarships to high-achieving students. Amounts vary by faculty. Ask the admissions office directly when applying about what is available for your program
Czech Government Scholarship (Developing Countries): covers full tuition for Master's programs plus a health insurance subsidy. Available to students from a specific list of countries -- check the current eligible list, as it changes. Deadline is typically in September the year before you want to start
Vaclav Havel Scholarship: for students from countries where academic freedom is restricted
Erasmus+ mobility grants: available once you are enrolled at Charles University, for exchange semesters at partner universities across Europe
For most students from Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, and other Southeast Asian countries, the most realistic financial support is a partial faculty merit scholarship. Full bursaries or need-based grants are rare at Charles University for non-EU students. Plan your finances on the assumption that you will be paying the full listed tuition fee, and treat any scholarship you receive as a bonus.
Student Life and What to Expect
Charles University students receive an ISIC (International Student Identity Card), which provides discounts on Prague's public transport, museums, theatres, and many restaurants and student services. The university maintains its own student health clinic, library network spanning multiple campuses, and sports facilities. The international student community at Charles is large -- students come from over 100 countries.
Prague itself is consistently rated one of Europe's safest and most liveable cities for students. The city centre is compact and walkable, with one of Europe's most reliable metro, tram, and bus networks. English is widely spoken in student areas, cafes, and service businesses. As an Asian student from Singapore or Southeast Asia, you will find a well-established international student community in Prague and a growing number of Asian restaurants, grocery stores, and social groups.
