- 6 min read

Charles University is the oldest and most internationally recognised university in the Czech Republic, ranking #265 in the QS World University Rankings 2026. It accepts international students from Asia every year — for English-taught programmes, fees start from around €4,100 per year for non-EU students. If you are researching European universities from Singapore, Malaysia, or anywhere in SE Asia, this guide covers everything: which programmes are available in English, what they cost, how to apply step by step, what life in Prague costs, and how to decide if Charles University is the right fit for you.
Why Charles University Stands Out
Founded in 1348, Charles University is not just the oldest university in the Czech Republic — it is one of the oldest in all of Central Europe. Seven centuries of uninterrupted academic tradition means it is deeply embedded in European research networks, and a Charles University degree carries real weight with employers across Europe and globally.
It ranks at #265 in the QS World University Rankings 2026, placing it as the top university in the Czech Republic. For Asian students who plan to work internationally after graduating, that ranking matters when graduate recruiters assess your application.
The university has 17 faculties across Prague covering medicine, law, science, humanities, social sciences, pharmacy, mathematics, physics, and more. It is a large, research-intensive institution — not a small international college, but a place where you study alongside Czech students and faculty who are actively contributing to European academic life.
English-Taught Programmes at Charles University
The majority of programmes at Charles University are taught in Czech. But there is a well-established and growing selection of fully English-taught degrees. For 2026–27, the university opened five new English-taught programmes across four faculties — including the first fully accredited English-language psychology bachelor's degree at any Czech public university.
Faculties with English-taught degree programmes include:
Faculty of Medicine — General Medicine (6-year MD) and Dentistry, both taught entirely in English; consistently among the most popular destinations for Asian students at the university
Faculty of Social Sciences — international relations, economics, political science, journalism, and from 2026–27 a new master's programme in digital media and games
Faculty of Humanities — interdisciplinary humanities programmes; and from 2026–27 a new bachelor's in Psychology, the first fully accredited English-language psychology degree at a Czech public university
Faculty of Science — life sciences, biochemistry, environmental studies, ecology
Faculty of Pharmacy — pharmacy programme taught in English
Faculty of Mathematics and Physics — computer science, mathematics, physics
Faculty of Law — selected programmes with English instruction
The complete searchable catalogue of all English-taught programmes — including descriptions, tuition fees per faculty, and application deadlines — is available at studycharles.cz.
Tuition Fees at Charles University
Programmes taught in Czech are free of charge for all students, including international students. For English-taught programmes, fees are set by each individual faculty. As a non-EU international student — which applies to Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, India, Vietnam, the Philippines, and most Asian countries — typical fees are:
Faculty of Social Sciences (English programmes): approximately €4,100–€5,000 per year
Faculty of Humanities: approximately €4,500–€5,500 per year
Faculty of Science: approximately €4,500–€6,000 per year
Faculty of Pharmacy: approximately €5,000–€6,000 per year
Faculty of Mathematics and Physics: €7,100 per year (from 2026–27)
Faculty of Medicine — General Medicine in English: approximately €12,000–€14,000 per year (the highest cost at the university, reflecting the intensive 6-year clinical programme)
Programmes taught in Czech: free of charge for all students
Tuition fees can change from one academic year to the next. Always confirm the exact figure with the specific faculty before submitting your application. The application fee is 940 CZK (approximately €38) per application, paid at the time of submission.
How to Apply to Charles University from Singapore or SE Asia
Key things to know before you apply
Charles University has no central Admissions Office. Each of its 17 faculties runs its own admission process independently. This means you apply directly to the faculty — not to the university as a whole. You can apply to multiple faculties at the same time, but each requires a separate application and a separate 940 CZK fee.
What you need to apply
Requirements vary by faculty and programme. For most English-taught bachelor's programmes, you will need:
Certified copy of your high school leaving certificate (for Singapore students: A-Level results or Polytechnic Diploma, depending on the programme)
Certified English translation of your documents if they are not already in English or Czech
Proof of English language proficiency (see below)
Completed online application submitted via the faculty's portal
Application fee payment of 940 CZK (approximately €38)
Some faculties also require entrance examinations or subject-specific admission tests — check the individual faculty website carefully
English language requirements
For English-taught programmes, you need proof of English at B2 level or above. Accepted tests and minimum scores:
IELTS: 6.0 or higher (some faculties require 6.5)
TOEFL iBT: 80 or higher
Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency: accepted at most faculties
Native English speakers and graduates of English-medium secondary schools may be exempt — confirm with the faculty directly
Test results must not be older than two years at the time of your application. If you are currently preparing for IELTS, sit the test at least three months before your target application deadline to allow time for a retake if needed.
Application deadlines
Deadlines vary significantly between faculties. In general:
Most bachelor's programmes: deadline falls between 28 February and 30 April of the year you intend to start
Most master's programmes: deadline typically 31 March of the entry year
Faculty of Medicine: runs its own admission cycle with specific dates — check directly with the faculty's admissions team
If you are targeting September 2027 entry, begin researching faculty-specific deadlines from October 2026. Many faculties open applications in late October or November. Do not wait until January — some deadlines fall as early as February.
Living Costs in Prague as a Charles University Student
Charles University's main campuses are in Prague. The city costs significantly less than London, Amsterdam, or Paris, while offering a very high quality of life — strong public transport, safe streets, excellent food, and a large international student community.
A realistic monthly budget for a student in Prague in 2025–26:
University dormitory room: €150–300 per month
Shared private flat (room in a 2–4 person flat near campus): €280–420 per month
Groceries: €100–160 per month
Eating out occasionally: €60–100 per month
Public transport monthly student pass: €20–30
Phone, internet, subscriptions: €20–40 per month
Realistic total: €500–800 per month, depending on whether you live in a dormitory or a private flat. International students admitted to Charles University can apply for dormitory accommodation, but spaces are not guaranteed — especially for popular faculties in central Prague. Apply for dormitory placement as soon as you receive your admission offer.

Scholarships at Charles University
Charles University offers internal merit-based scholarships to students who perform well after their first year of study. These are partial fee reductions rather than full scholarships, but they do reward strong academic performance. For Asian students seeking more substantial funding, the main options are:
Czech Government Scholarships — the Czech Ministry of Education (MŠMT) awards scholarships to students from developing countries, including several SE Asian nations. Applications go through the Czech embassy in your home country. These can cover or significantly offset tuition fees
Erasmus+ incoming exchanges — if your home university in Singapore or Malaysia has a bilateral agreement with Charles University, you may be eligible for an Erasmus+ exchange scholarship covering living costs during an exchange semester
Faculty-specific grants — some faculties have small discretionary funds for excellent applicants; worth asking about when you contact the faculty admissions team
